A Midlife Journey on the Iditarod Trail

it isn't all pretty

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

This last weekend David and I went out with Donna, Jeff and Ellen to Eagle Song Lodge 48 miles along the Junior Iditarod Trail. It was a training run for Ellen, so some of us were on snow machines.(I'm sorry, but I just don't get why some people would prefer a machine over a dog team!)

The dogs were on fire - Ellen was a-racin - the weather was wonderfully warm, the day long. Donna and I shared a snow machine and pulled a heavy freight sled - something neither of us would normally agree to do.

But we did. And there was a freak accident. Going something like 5 miles an hour a twist of fate made the freight sled lift jam and then slam into me. I slammed into Donna (but she had a helmet on) Alas, I split my head open and feared a broken something important in my back..... (I got flown off the trail to Anchorage)(13 stitches and glue but good xrays...)

But all is fine enough. Not great, a little painful, but when I look around I realize how I remain one of the luckiest. Though my current fashion is "Frankenstein meets Rocky" - I just can't complain....from my couch as I do a bit of recovering....
